What is the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia?

When a loved one begins to show signs of cognitive decline, it can be both frightening and confusing. One of the most common misconceptions we encounter at Private Health is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer's disease. These two terms are often used to describe the same thing, but they refer to different aspects of cognitive diseases.

What is dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for a number of diseases that affect the brain and cause a gradual impairment of memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities. It is not a specific disease, but rather a symptom caused by various diseases that affect brain function.

Dementia can present differently from person to person, depending on the underlying disease causing it. Common symptoms include forgetfulness, difficulty finding the right words, confusion about time and place. Dementia can be caused by many different diseases, including Parkinson's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Huntington's disease.

What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for around 50-60% of all dementia cases. It is a progressive brain disease that specifically affects memory, thinking and behavior.

The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease often start with mild memory problems, such as difficulty remembering recent events or conversations. As the disease progresses, people with Alzheimer's can experience significant difficulties with everyday tasks, problems with language and disorientation in time and place.

The difference between Alzheimer's and dementia

While dementia is a broad term that describes a range of symptoms caused by different brain diseases, Alzheimer's is a specific disease that is one of the most common causes of dementia. Alzheimer's is a type of dementia, but not everyone with dementia has Alzheimer's.

Dementia can be caused by many different conditions and therefore treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause. It is therefore important to get an accurate diagnosis so that the right treatment can be initiated.
