Palliative care is a form of palliative care that focuses on improving the quality of life for people with life-threatening illnesses. It aims to relieve physical, psychological, social and spiritual pain and suffering. Palliative care can be provided at home, in hospitals or hospices and can begin early in the course of an illness to support the patient and their families throughout the process.
What does palliation mean?
The term 'palliation' in healthcare refers to the relief of symptoms in people with serious illnesses. It's not about curing the disease, but about ensuring that the patient is as comfortable as possible, physically, mentally and emotionally. Palliation is now considered an important part of the treatment pathway for many seriously ill patients.
Basic and specialized palliative care
Palliative care is divided into two levels: basic and specialized care.
- Basic palliative care is provided by healthcare professionals who do not necessarily have palliation as their main task. This can be staff in home care, nursing homes or hospitals. Basic care is often integrated into the regular care and treatment the patient is already receiving.
- Specialized palliative care is provided by professionals who have palliation as their primary task. This can be in hospices or palliative care units in hospitals.
Private palliative care
While the public sector offers both basic and specialized palliative care, private palliative care can be a valuable alternative or complement to public care. At Private Health, we offer personalized and tailored palliative care that is adapted to each client's needs and wishes. Our experienced private nurses create a safe and caring atmosphere in the home, where there is room to focus on relief, peace and quality of life.
