Becoming parents for the first time is a transformative experience. It brings an abundance of love and joy, but also a host of new challenges and uncertainties.

At Private Health, we've put together some advice on how to navigate this new phase of life and how we can help you with professional care support when you need it.

1. Accept help

As new parents, it can be tempting to try to do everything yourself. It's important to accept help, whether it comes from friends, family or professionals. Friends and family can be an invaluable source of support, whether it's help with cooking, cleaning or just giving you a break to take a rest.

Private Health offers tailored private maternity care to ensure a safe start for new parents. Our experienced maternity nurses can assist with everything from breastfeeding guidance and C-section care to home support and labor companionship. We are with you and ready to show, guide, support and motivate. We act as the extra hands you need to give you a few hours to rest and recharge before you have to hold your new baby in your arms again.

2. Remember to rest

Sleep can feel like a rare luxury when you have a newborn baby, but it's essential for your physical and mental health. Make sure you rest whenever you can - even if it's just a short nap while the baby sleeps. Prioritize rest over other tasks like cleaning or washing. Your body needs time to recover after giving birth and your mind needs rest to cope with the new challenges.

3. Believe in yourself

It can be easy to get overwhelmed by the responsibilities that come with parenthood. You will receive an abundance of advice from everyone around you, but remember that no one knows your child better than you. Trust your instincts and listen to yourself. You are the best parent for your child. But when you're unsure about something, it's okay to seek advice.

4. Ask questions

No parent has all the answers, especially new parents. It's perfectly normal to feel unsure or have questions. Don't hesitate to ask questions, whether it's to your midwife, health visitor, or to us at Private Health. There are no questions that are too small or too big.

5. Enjoy it

Time with your newborn baby goes faster than you think, even if the sleepless nights can feel long. It's important to stop and enjoy the moments, even the challenging ones. Each milestone is a special part of your baby's development and every day with your baby is unique. Give yourself permission to be present in the moment and enjoy the small moments of joy and love.

6. Communication with your partner

If you have a partner, it's important to keep the lines of communication open. Talk about your feelings, concerns and joys. This is a big change for both of you and by supporting each other, you can strengthen your relationship while caring for your newborn.

7. Be patient with yourself

Parenting is a learning process and it's okay to make mistakes along the way. Be gentle with yourself when things don't go as planned and remember that the most important thing is the love and care you give your child.

8. Seek community

Consider joining a group of other new parents or a moms group where you can share your experiences, get advice and support from others in the same situation. Feeling understood and supported by other parents can be a great help during this time.

9. Accept emotional ups and downs

Parenthood can be an emotional rollercoaster ride. One day you can feel on top of the world and the next you can feel overwhelmed. It's perfectly normal to experience these emotional fluctuations. The important thing is to accept them and remember that it's okay to feel insecure or tired. Seek support when you need it and know that you are not alone in these feelings.

10. Be patient with your new baby

Your newborn is a little wonder slowly discovering the world around them and it can take time for them to settle into their new surroundings. When your baby cries, has trouble falling asleep or just needs extra care, it's important to meet them with patience and love. Remember that these early challenges are only temporary and your calm presence will give your baby the reassurance they need to feel loved and protected.
